Healthy Indoor Air Quality - Need of the hour

Indoors are meant to be safer. So should be the indoor air, right? Interestingly that is not the case most of the times.

With the growing population, technology, global warming and environmental hazards the outdoor air is getting polluted everyday. There are measures being taken by governments around the world to improve outdoor air quality and keep the pollution level in control.

People think outdoor air is polluted and they are safe indoors. Is it really true? Indoor Air contains more germs and pollutants than we think.

Researches say people acquire more airborne infections indoors. There are air filters and purifiers available in the market to take care of the dust, pollen, pet dander and other particles that are visible to human eyes. How about the germs that are invisible? People end up breathing them all the time without even realizing. Normal Filter based air purifiers can not eliminate germs as they are not designed for that.

The size of the airborne microorganisms are too small for normal air purifiers to filter them. This can be compared to a normal hand soap and alcohol hand sanitizer. The soap can clean hands from dirt, grease, oil etc., but it can not kill germs and hence the alcohol based hand sanitizers are in demand during this pandemic situation.

Air Purification Technologies with Germicidal Efficacy
  • UVGI  - Ultra Violet Germicidal Irradiation is a well known and considered to be the most effective method in destroying germs. The germicidal property of the UVC spectrum destroys the DNA & RNA of the microorganisms so they can not survive or reproduce. 
  • Air Ionizers - The negative Ions are released into the air which binds with the air particles, neutralizes and removes them from the air.

UVGI - Ultraviolet Germicidal Irradiation

UVGI (ultraviolet germicidal irradiation) technology is a seasoned disinfection methodology that is being used in industries like healthcare for more than 90 years. UV technology for disinfection is recognized and endorsed by the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE), the CDC and the EPA.

UV-C, also known as germicidal UV, includes wavelengths from 200 to 280 nm. It is effective at destroying and deactivating pathogens. UVGI (Ultraviolet Germicidal Irradiation) Technology is already being used in hospitals to disinfect contaminated surfaces and facilities like surgical rooms for many years. It is also used in water purification processes and equipments. 

Given the current need to sanitize space and air than ever before, UVGI is widely considered an option to keep the indoors germs free. Ultraviolet radiation can be used for sterilization because it can kill microscopic organisms like bacteria and viruses, according to the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) guideline for health care facilities. It has also been used to disinfect drinking water, air and contact lenses.

Currently the UV Germicidal irradiation is used by several medical institutions across the world to disinfect the N95 masks that are used by the healthcare professionals and Covid positive patients. Ultraviolet light is an efficient, proven, and effective technology for eliminating viruses, including SARS-CoV-2 that causes COVID-19.UVC technology is being used in Metro Trains in countries around the world to disinfect entire trains. UVC lamps and robots are also used to sanitize water, objects such as laboratory equipment, and spaces such as buses and airplanes.

Ionization

Ionizers continually emit negative ions in to the air.
